Last year, the Tampa Bay Derby was won by Street Sense, who went on to win the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) at Churchill Downs and contend for Horse of the Year.
This year, all eyes are on War Pass. Trained by Nick Zito, the colt has won all of his five starts in impressive fashion. Like Street Sense before him, War Pass enters the Tampa Bay Derby as the winner of the Bessemer Trust Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I).
TVG's Todd Schrupp and Jill Byrne will be trackside to provide up-to-the-minute live reports beginning at noon ET. In Florida, Sun Sports will simulcast TVG's live coverage of the Tampa Bay Derby from 5-6 p.m. ET.
"When we learned that War Pass was planning on running in the Tampa Bay Derby, we quickly shuffled our spring schedule to make sure that TVG would be on site to bring our viewers the action firsthand," said Tony Allevato, TVG senior vice president and executive producer.
Festival Day at Tampa Bay Downs, one of the largest annual sporting events in the area, will also feature the $200,000 Florida Oaks (gr. III) for 3-year-old fillies at 1 1/16 miles, the $175,000 Hillsborough Stakes (gr. III) for older females at 1 1/8 miles on turf, and the $75,000 Turf Dash at five furlongs.
