Bob Meldahl, agent for jockey Mike Smith, breathed a sigh of relief in the Hollywood Park stable area Sunday morning while relating that the veteran jockey was only sore after an ugly spill here Saturday.
"He goes down twice in the same day and has no major injury; I feel lucky," said Meldahl. "Mike's okay. He just has a sore groin and toe. I told him to take a few days off to be on the safe side. He's off through Wednesday, and we will go from there."
Smith, 37, was unseated after Prized Friend broke through the inner fence while in the lead at the top of the stretch in the $150,000 TVG Khaled Stakes on turf. The horse was uninjured. Smith was taken to Centinela Hospital, examined and released.
Two races earlier, Bold N Broke broke down, in the $250,000 Snow Chief Stakes under Smith. Bold N Broke was later euthanized.
