Golden Eagle Farm's General Challenge, eased in Saturday's Tiznow Stakes at Hollywood Park after battling on the front end, returned in good shape and will not be retired, according to an assistant for trainer Bob Baffert.
Winner of the 2000 Santa Anita Handicap and the 1999 runnings of the Santa Anita Derby and Pacific Classic (all gr. I) , the 7-year-old gelding was making his first start in 32 months. General Challenge has earned $2,876,018 in his career
His connections had said prior to the race that General Challenge would be retired if he did not perform well in the Tiznow.
"He just got tired; he will be fitter for his next start," said Tim Yakteen, Baffert's assistant.
Yakteen said Golden Eagle's Chief Planner, who won the $250,000 Snow Chief, also came out of his effort in good shape.
"Nothing has been planned for either (horse)," he said.
