A Foxtrail colt brought $160,000 Thursday to top the third session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's April sale of 2-year-olds in training. Pharmaceutical executive Eugene Melnyk purchased the chestnut prospect from Halcyon Hammock Farm, agent.
The colt is the first foal produced from the 6-year-old unraced Personal Flag mare Prospector's Bliss. His second dam, Prospector's Fuel (by Allen's Prospect), was a multiple winner of restricted stakes in Maryland.
Joseph Graffeo purchased the colt for only $10,000 as a weanling at the 2001 OBS October mixed sale. Prior to the OBS April auction, the colt turned in one of the fastest works at an eighth of a mile, covering the distance in :10 1/5.
In all, 172 horses were sold for a gross of $3,337,700, an average of $19,405, and a median of $11,500. The number sold was up 6.8% from the comparable session a year ago. But the gross, average, and median declined 14.8%, 20.2%, and 20.7%, respectively. The buy-back rate was 30.1%, with 74 of the 246 horses offered failing to find new homes.
For the auction's first three days, 528 horses were sold for a gross of $11,068,200 and an average of $20,963. Compared to last year, the number sold was up 2.1%, but the gross and average were down 7.0% and 9.0%, respectively. The buy-back rate was 28.5%, with 210 of the 738 horses offered failing to find new homes.
In 2002, 161 horses were sold during the third session for a gross of $3,916,200, an average of $24,324, and a median $14,500. The figures for three sessions were 517 horses sold for a gross of $11,903,700 and an average of $23,025.
The sale ends Friday, with the fourth session getting under way at 10:30 a.m. (EDT).
