7-Year-Old Falcon Flight Retired

Trainer Donald Burke confirmed Wednesday that 7-year-old French-bred horse Falcon Flight, a graded stakes winner of more than $1.4 million, has been retired.

Racing for Gary Tanaka, Falcon Flight was third in his last race, the $14 million Hong Kong Vase at Sha Tin Racecourse on Dec. 15. He was also third in the Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. IT) at Arlington Park on Oct. 26. He was in the money in four of five starts in 2002, finishing fifth but beaten by only a neck in the Arlington Million (gr. IT). He earned $947,700 last year.

Bred by Petra Bloodstock Agency Ltd. of France, Falcon Flight is by Persian Bold (IRE) from the Gay Mecene broodmare Flying Circus.

He recorded a lifetime mark of five wins, two seconds and three thirds in 20 career starts for total earnings of $1,428,849.

Falcon Flight won three graded stakes on the turf in the United States after arriving from Great Britain in 1999. He won the 1 1/4-mile Arlington Handicap (gr. IIIT) over a yielding course on July 27, which was his last victory. He equaled the track record at Arlington in winning the 12-furlong Stars and Stripes Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. IIIT) in 2:27.86 in July of 2001 and also captured the 1 1/8-mile El Rincon (gr. IIT) at Santa Anita in his first U.S. start in April of 2000.

Future plans for Falcon Flight were not announced.
