Behindatthebar, winner of the Lexington Stakes (gr. II) at Keeneland in his last start April 19, will be shipped west for the $350,000-added Swaps Stakes (gr. II) for 3-year-olds at Hollywood Park July 12, trainer Todd Pletcher said.
“He worked well this morning, five-eighths in a minute and two-fifths,” said Pletcher, speaking from Belmont Park July 6 after the colt’s drill over the main track. “We will put him on a plane Tuesday.”
David Flores has the call back on the Kentucky-bred colt, a three-time winner in five starts. “We decided to pass on the Kentucky Derby (Presented by Yum! Brands, gr. I),” explained Pletcher of the lengthy layoff. “We entered him in the Preakness (gr. I), but he bruised a foot and we scratched him. We have been pointing him to the Swaps since.”
Behindatthebar, who broke his maiden at Santa Anita in February, could face seven rivals in the 1 1/8-mile Cushion Track test. Other probable starters are Colonel John (with jockey Garrett Gomez aboard), Dixie Chatter (Richard Migliore), Madeo (Mike Smith), Nownownow (Julien Leparoux), Tres Borrachos (Tyler Baze), Trevor’s Clever (Joseph Talamo), and Two Step Salsa (Martin Pedroza).
Nownownow, a recent addition to the Jason Orman stable at Santa Anita, received the green light for the Swaps after working July 6. Nownownow won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Monmouth Park in October for trainer Patrick Biancone. He was shipped to Ireland this spring and finished fifth in the Boylesports Irish Two Thousand Guineas (Ire-I) May 24 for trainer David Wachman before Fab Oak Stable turned him over to Orman.
