Toussaud, the Dam of Empire Maker, Top Kentucky Broodmare
Date Posted: 6/7/2003 8:02:53 PM

War Emblem, a 2002 Eclipse Award winner who won the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) and Preakness Stakes (gr. I), was named Horse of the Year and outstanding 3-year-old male by the Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders.

The organization also paid tribute to Juddmonte Farms' blue hen mare Toussaud as top broodmare. Toussaud, a 14-year-old homebred daughter of El Gran Senor out of the In Reality mare Image of Reality, is the second Juddmonte broodmare to win top honors. Juddmonte, owned by Khalid Abdullah, won 1997 honors with Slightly Dangerous.

Toussaud is the dam of grade I winners Chester House, Honest Lady, Chiselling, and Empire Maker, plus grade II winner Decarchy, from her six foals of racing age. Empire Maker, the farm's current start, became a grade I winner this year by winning the Florida Derby (gr. I), then added the Wood Memorial Stakes (gr. I) to his list of accomplishments. He reigns as favorite for the Kentucky Derby (gr. I). Toussaud produced a Kingmambo filly this year and was bred to A.P. Indy.
