OBS 2YO sale gets off to a 'high-flying' start.
The Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's April auction of 2-year-olds in training got off to a solid start Monday in Central Florida. The 186 horses sold grossed $4,528,000, representing increases of 12.0% and 16.7%, respectively, from the comparable session a year ago. The average price was $24,344, up 4.2%. The buy-back rate was 25.9%, with 65 of the 251 juveniles offered failing to find new homes.
In 2002, the 166 horses sold on the first day grossed $3,878,700 and averaged $23,366.
A Forest Wildcat filly topped the session at $150,000. Consigned by Don R. Graham and Ocala Oaks, Inc., she was purchased by Charlotte Weber's Live Oak Plantation.
Carl Bowling's Straightaway Farm, agent, bought the filly for $20,000 at last year's Keeneland September yearling sale. She ranked among the fastest workers in the under tack show for the OBS auction, covering an eighth of a mile in :10 1/5. Her dam, Clever Kat, is a multiple stakes-winning daughter of Comet Kat.
The OBS April sale runs through Friday, with sessions beginning at 10:30 a.m. each day.
