Felix Monserrate's 12-year-old maiden Zippy Chippy ran his string of consecutive losses to 97 with a last-place finish in the first race at Thistledown Wednesday, an $8,200 maiden special weight contested at 5 1/2 furlongs that drew eight entrants.
Zippy Chippy was sent off at 42-1, second-longest shot in the field. He finished 31 3/4 lengths behind the winner, the Jerry Hollendorfer-trained and owned Mr. Chris Gibbs.
According to the track chart, Zippy Chippy drifted out through the stretch while trailing. He was 15 1/2 lengths behind the seventh-place finisher, Dude Anonymous.
It was the first start for Zippy Chippy against equines since finishing fifth in a field of eight in a maiden contest at Northampton Sept. 15. Prior to that, Zippy Chippy proved a monster at 40-yards on turf with back-to-back wins against minor league baseball players. Twice he beat outfielders for the Rochester Red Wings while running across the outfield at Frontier Field.
A New York-bred Compliance gelding, Zippy Chippy has not placed in an official race since his 9-year-old season in 2000, which ironically was the same year he suffered his only loss in three tries against a human. Zippy Chippy was beat by former Red Wings outfielder Jose Herrera.
Zippy Chippy has seven seconds and 12 thirds entering his tenth season of racing with earnings of $29,952.
