Former trainer Don Wiggins died Saturday morning at Hermann Hospital in Houston after suffering a fall in the back yard of his home on Friday. Don Wiggins is the father of Kentucky-based conditioner Hal Wiggins. He was 83 years old.

Wiggins was born in Port Arthur, Texas, and worked in an oil refinery before beginning his training career on the New Mexico circuit. A release from Hal Wiggins Stables credits Don Wiggins as the source of the younger Wiggins' interest in horses. His grandson Lon Wiggins is currently training horses at Arlington International.
