Man Among Men, who finished 10th in the Arkansas Derby (gr. II) as the 5-2 favorite, suffered cuts on his right front leg in the race and will not run in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) on May 3, trainer Gary Mandella said Sunday morning.
"He kind of got run over top of on the clubhouse turn," Mandella said of the son of Gentlemen, who defeated Derby favorite Empire Maker in the Feb. 7 Sham Stakes.
"He cut his leg, grabbed a quarter and cut his foot pretty bad. It was not a clean trip, but we scoped him after the race and he did not bleed, but we're not going to any of the big races right off the bat," Mandella said. "We'll bring him home and see what's best, but the Kentucky Derby is out."
