Diatribe skimmed the rail through the stretch under jockey Jim Cassidy to win the Caulfield Cup (Aus-I) Saturday at Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne, Australia. Diatribe stopped the timer in a new track record of 2:25.32 for the 1 1/2 miles and finished a length in front of Kaapstad Way. Fairway was another 1 1/4 lengths back in third. Godolphin Racing's All The Way was 16th of the 18 runners.
The win marks the first Caulfield Cup victory for trainer George Hanlon. The 83-year-old conditioner previously saddled Arwon (1978), Our Sophia (1985), and Congressman (1988) prior to their Caulfield Cup losses, all three of which came in photo-finishes.
Diatribe (Brief Truce--Gabbing Gloria, by Desert Wine) earned his fifth career win from 28 races. The 4-year-old Australian-bred colt won for the first time since winning the Rosehill Guineas (Aus-I) by a neck as a 3-year-old in April.
