Excessivepleasure Named Sunland Park Horse of the Meet

Sunland Park officials named Excessivepleasure Horse of the Meet for the 2002-03 live horse racing season. Excessivepleasure won the $500,000 WinStar Derby, the richest race ever run at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino, on March 30.

Ridden by Hall of Fame jockey Pat Day, Excessivepleasure responded courageously against well regarded Spensive and Apalachian Thunder to win the inaugural running of the WinStar Derby.

The 3-year-old son of In Excess picked up a $270,000 winner's check for owners Ty and Leroy Leatherman of Granada Hills, California. Lifetime
earnings for the WinStar Derby champ exceed $442,000 from three career wins. He is trained by Doug O'Neill.

Additionally, Excessivepleasure was named Thoroughbred of the Meet and top 3-year-old colt or gelding.

$256,450 WinStar Sunland Park Oaks heroine Island Fashion earned the top year-old Thoroughbred Filly honor. The come from behind winner earned $153,870 from her first career victory for the Everest Stables. Iggy Puglisi rode the Petionville filly for trainer Nick Canani. Island Fashion's next start may come in the prestigious Grade I Kentucky Oaks to be run at Churchill Downs on Friday, May 2.

Rosenda Parra's multiple stakes winning mare filly Cielo Girl took home the top older Thoroughbred filly or mare distinction. The fast closing daughter of
Conquistador Cielo won both the Santa Teresa and Harry Henson Handicaps.

Johnie Nall's charge Funny Meeting earned top sprinter and most improved honors. The former Southern California runner earned a 99 Beyer speed figure for his Bill Thomas Memorial Handicap win. The multiple winner set a new track record for 6 and 1/2 furlongs in 1:14.85.

The versatile stakes star Ciento was named the top older New Mexico-bred based upon impressive scores in the $132,200 Johnie L. Jamison Stakes and the $131,000 New Mexico State University Stakes. He defeated Star Smasher in two out of three stakes events for trainer Dick Cappellucci. The $430,000 earner is owned by Arden Hawkins, Glen Robertson and John Terry.
