Patton's Victory Marches to Fifth Season Win

Marching from gate to wire, Patton's Victory held off Colorful Tour by a length Wednesday in the $100,000 Fifth Season Stakes for older horses at Oaklawn Park's "Racing Festival of the South."
Ridden by Alex Birzer, 5-year-old Patton's Victory, a Kentucky-bred gelding by Patton, won his fifth straight race for trainer Stanley Roberts in a time of 1:43 1/5 for the 1 1/16-mile test on a fast track. It was the fourth straight win for Patton's Victory at Oaklawn, who nonetheless went off at odds of 12-1 in the seven-horse field.
Makors Mark was third 4 1/4 lengths behind. Windward Passage, the 7-5 favorite Wednesday who won last year's Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn, finished sixth after breaking last and never rallying, beaten by 7 1/4 lengths.
Patton's Victory got loose on the front end and enjoyed comfortable fractions of :23 3/5 for the opening quarter-mile, :47 3/5 for the half and 1:12 for six furlongs while taking a three-length lead over Colorful Tour and Makors Mark into the stretch. Colorful Tour, ridden by Luis Quinonez, offered a mild rally while roused for the stretch run after he was a bit rank early. Makors Mark held on to the show spot over Ask the Lord.
Bred by Brereton C. Jones, Patton's Victory earned $60,000 for owner Highway 1 Racing Stable. The winner ran for a $7,500 claiming price at Hoosier Park last fall.
Patton's Victory paid $26.60, $9.40 and $5.60. Colorful Tour returned $4.80 and $4. Makors Mark's show price was $10.20. The $2 exacta was $101.60.
