(Edited Keeneland press release)
Keeneland kicks off its 2009 selling season on Jan. 12 in Lexington with its January horses of all ages auction. Scheduled to be offered during the opening session of the six-day auction is 2002 Horse of the Year Azeri, who is in foal to 2004 Horse of the Year Ghostzapper.
Azeri is one of only six fillies ever to win Horse of the Year honors, and she is the only female to earn three Eclipse Awards as champion older mare (2002, 2003, and 2004). John Sikura’s Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency will consign the 11-year-old daughter of Jade Hunter for the Allen E. Paulson Living Trust.
Also in the January catalog is multiple grade I winner Island Fashion ( in foal to Ghostzapper), who is consigned by Pope McLean (Crestwood Farm), as agent for the first phase of the reduction of Everest Stable.
“The January Sale offers exciting opportunities for buyers, whatever their interest,” said Tom Thornbury, Keeneland’s associate director of sales. “This year, besides stars like Azeri and Island Fashion, we’ve cataloged more than 500 horses of racing age, a wide variety of yearlings by hot sires, and numerous stallion prospects. The January sale features quality stock to fit any price range.”
There are 2,379 horses in the auction’s catalog. They include 986 broodmares and 834 yearlings.
Sale sessions will begin each day at 10 a.m. (EST). The entire auction will be streamed live at Keeneland.com.
