Ellis On to Kentucky with Atswhatimtalknbout

Trainer Ron Ellis said he still plans to ship Atswhatimtalknbout, a disappointing fourth as the public choice in the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I), to Kentucky on Wednesday.

"That gives us a couple of days to evaluate him and make sure he's OK," Ellis said. "He didn't run a jump (in the race) and David (Flores) said he was going up and down most of the race instead of actually leveling out. It was kind of an unusual race because three or four horses were eased, so I don't know if the track was a little different or what. But he wasn't acting the same yesterday morning. He was a little bit quieter than usual, so it might have just been a bad day for him."

"We'll take some blood on him tomorrow and make sure his blood work is all OK," trainer Ron Ellis said of Atswhatimtalknbout, who was beaten by 2 ½ lengths as the 3-2 favorite in the Santa Anita Derby. "Physically, he couldn't look any better. It was just a bad day."

Asked whether Flores would stay on the horse, Ellis said, "I think so. David didn't do anything wrong. He was probably as disappointed as anybody. He had a lot of faith in this horse. He let us all down, but he can bounce back. It's only one race in a career, hopefully."

Reminded that many horses have lost their last start prior to winning the Derby, Ellis said, "That was the silver lining we were talking about yesterday. There's a lot of horses that have lost this race and gone on to win the Kentucky Derby."
