Former major league pitcher and current Thoroughbred owner Rob Murphy will announce the third race at Gulfstream Park Friday. Murphy won the right to call the race by being the high bidder at a charity auction March 25 sponsored by Gulfstream Park and the Florida Turf Writers Association.

Murphy, who played for the Cincinnati Reds, Boston Red Sox, Seattle Mariners, Houston Astros, St. Louis Cardinals, New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers and Florida Marlins during 11 big league seasons from 1985-95, is the managing partner of M375 Thoroughbreds, Inc. The partnership's most prominent runner thus far has been Platinum Tiara, who was third in the 2000 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies.

Murphy, who will be making his announcing debut, might be genetically pre-disposed to race calling, being the grandson of the late Frank Ashley, who called nine Kentucky Derbies and was the announcer at Oaklawn Park, Arlington Park and several other venues from the 1920's through 1970.

Friday's third race is a $38,000 allowance event for three-year-olds at one mile and one-sixteenth. The race has drawn eight entries.
