(Edited press release)
To celebrate this year’s Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), the new Oldham Country Public Library in La Grange, Ky. near Louisville will host an equine-themed, nationally touring exhibit April 13-May 18.
The exhibit, titled “The Literary Horse: When Legends Come to Life,” will feature photos of today’s horses and riders paired with quotations from well-known books.
“All of us know and love the winged horses of Churchill Downs," said equine photographer Vanessa Wright, "but how many of us would be astonished to discover that the horses of myth and literature are alive and thriving in our neighborhoods, too?"
Showcasing first-time riders through Special Olympic and Olympic champions, and equestrian disciplines ranging from carriage driving and show-jumping to jousting and vaulting (gymnastics on horseback), “The Literary Horse” provides visitors with a real-life tour of horse classics, such as The Iliad, Richard III, and Don Quixote, plus children’s tales such as Cinderella, The Arabian Nights, and King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.
“Oldham County has a rich heritage of horsemanship,” said Bethany Morse, outreach librarian at the Oldham County Public Library. “What better way to celebrate such a wonderful part of our community history, and what better time than at Derby?”
