Anees, champion 2-year-old male of 1999 who is standing his third season at stud at Mill Ridge Farm near Lexington, fractured his left front leg in a paddock accident the morning of March 31 and is expected to miss the remainder of the breeding season. He underwent surgery later that afternoon at Hagyard-Davidson-McGee veterinary clinic near Lexington and was outfitted with a cast.
"It was a simple case of running, then stopping," said a farm representative in explaining what caused the fracture. "He didn't run into a fence or anything like that. It's a pretty bad break. We're keeping our fingers crossed."
Six-year-old Anees (Unbridled--Ivory Idol, by Alydar) scored his major win in the 1999 Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) and earned a career total of $699,200. Anees, who stands for $15,000, has covered 29 mares this year. Mill Ridge is owned by Alice Chandler and her husband, Dr. John Chandler.
