I Want Revenge was one of five horses posting workouts April 21 at Churchill Downs in preparation for the May 2 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), completing five furlongs on a slightly-off track in 1:01 3/5. The time was eighth-fastest among 19 horses working the distance.
The son of Stephen Got Even, who was ridden by regular jockey Joe Talamo, began his work two lengths behind stablemate Gato Go Win, and finished a neck ahead, galloping out six furlongs in 1:15 2/5. I Want Revenge’s earlier splits were :12 2/5, :25, and :37.
Jeff Mullins, who trains the Wood Memorial (gr. I) winner, called the workout a good one.
“The track was a little mushy this morning,” he said. “I think our horse got plenty out of it. He galloped out good and strong. Joe said he handled the track pretty well. I think we are in pretty good shape.”
Talamo, who has ridden I Want Revenge in his last six starts, said the colt handled the Churchill oval well, despite an off-track compromised by heavy rain on Sunday and Monday.
“He had a good little target out there,” Talamo said of Gato Go Win. “He sat right behind … he did pretty much what he does all of the time. He always gallops out really good.”
Four other Derby contenders also posted works:
