The heirs of Henryk de Kwiatkowski will continue to operate historic Calumet Farm as a Thoroughbred nursery, according to his widow, Barbara de Kwiatkowski.
"We're going forward; everything is just the same as when he left us," she said on March 31. "We're a family, and we're working together as a family. Everyone is in agreement. Now, we're just crossing our fingers for Region of Merit (a Triple Crown candidate who captured the Tampa Bay Derby, gr. III)."
De Kwiatkowski died in the Bahamas on March 17. In addition to his widow, he is survived by their son, Nicholas, and his six children from a previous marriage: Conrad, Stephan, Nicholas, Michelle, Nicole, and Lulu. De Kwiatkowski purchased most of Lexington-based Calumet's land and its name at auction in 1992.
"He loved Calumet; Calumet was his baby," Mrs. de Kwiatkowski said. "He wanted to be buried at Calumet, and we did look into it. But it was against law."
Paperwork filed with the Kentucky Secretary of State's office identifies Calumet's owner as Kennelot Stables Limited, a foreign corporation that has its main office in Nassau. Kennelot is owned by a trust, and de Kwiatkowski's widow and his children serve as the trustees, according to Calumet general manager Tony Cissell. He declined to provide the name of the trust or any other information concerning De Kwiatkowski's estate.
"Estate planning is a process, and it is still being undertaken," Cissell said.
Mrs. de Kwiatkowski also would not discuss the details of the estate, describing them as "private."
"His widow and his children are united in wanting to preserve his (de Kwiatkowski's) legacy," Cissell said. "They will pursue racing, and they will also continue to sell some horses commercially."
