Man Among Men, in need of more time following his disappointing seventh in the San Felipe, probably will pass the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) on april 5 and point to the $500,000 Arkansas Derby (Gr. II) at 1 1/8 miles at Oaklawn Park a week later.
"I don't think he'll make the Santa Anita Derby," trainer Gary Mandella said Wednesday of the son of Gentlemen who defeated Kentucky Derby favorite Empire Maker in the Feb. 7 Sham Stakes.
"He lost weight after the San Felipe and I want to take the extra week (from April 5 to April 12). If I run him in the Santa Anita Derby, it would mean bringing him back in 20 days. The Arkansas Derby is the likely spot."
Mandella said Alex Solis would ride in the Arkansas Derby.
