Smok'n Frolic cruises to an easy victory Next Move, Sunday at Aqueduct.
Smok'n Frolic and John Velazquez went to the lead from the starting gate and never looked back to win the $108,000 Next Move Handicap (gr. III) at Aqueduct on Sunday.
The victory pushed Smok'n Frolic, the 4-5 favorite owned by Dogwood Stable, past the $1 million milestone. The $64,800 first-place check increased her career total to $1,015,844.
"All you have to do is bring her over and she does the rest," said Seth Benzel, the assistant to winning trainer Todd Pletcher. "She's got a lot of class. This race was a good example of that."
Smok'n Frolic, the high weight at 120 pounds, broke on the lead in the six-horse field of older fillies and mares. She set fractions of :24 1/5 and :47 3/5 and 1:10 4/5 before completing the 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.
"She broke so good I just put my hands down and let her run," Velazquez said. "She was real comfortable out there. She was the class of the field. She was a little hot in the paddock, but once we got out onto the track she was fine. She's a solid stakes horse."
The Next Move victory was reminiscent of Smok'n Frolic's victory in the 1 1/8-mile Demoiselle (gr. II) on Nov. 24 at Aqueduct which completed a solid juvenile campaign that included victories in the Tempted (gr. III) and Fashion Stakes.
So far during her 4-year-old campaign, Smok'n Frolic is 2-1-0 from three starts with a victory in the Sunshine Millions Distaff on Jan. 25 at Santa Anita. She was second in the Rampart Handicap (gr. II) in her previous start on March 1 at Gulfstream Park.
Ellie's Moment could not make up any ground in the stretch and finished second under Shaun Bridgmohan. Pupil and Stewart Elliott were third.
Smok'n Frolic, a 4-year-old gray Florida-bred filly by Smoke Glacken, improved her record to 7-3-0 from 17 starts.
She paid $3.80, $2.40 and $2.10. Ellie's Moment returned $2.90 and $2.10. Pupil's show price was $2.10.
