This year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I) will be linked with a California Lottery promotion, officials announced Aug. 3.
Breeders’ Cup and the Oak Tree Racing Association, which will host the Nov. 6-7 Breeders’ Cup World Championships, said the new Breeders’ Cup Classic Lottery Sweepstakes will offer prizes worth $230,000 during the Oak Tree meet at Santa Anita Park.
Fans 18-years of age and older can begin participating in the promotion Oct. 16, and may purchase $5 of “Hot Spot” tickets up until the day of the $5-million Breeders’ Cup Classic.
Players can participate by visiting the California Lottery Web site, any one of 22,000 Lottery retail locations, or by visiting any operating racetrack or simulcast center in California.
With their $5 Hot Spot purchase, players will receive a quick pick of a horse to be entered in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Players will be given a horse name and horse number for the first-place finisher in the Classic.
All players who have matched the winning horse in the Classic will be entered in a drawing whereby 456 winners will share the total prize of $230,000. One winner will receive the top prize of $50,000, and five others will receive $25,000 each.
After that, 25 fans will win $1,000 each, 175 will win $100 each, and 250 players will each receive $50.
“We’re delighted that we’ve been able to form this partnership with the Lottery and the Breeders’ Cup,” Santa Anita vice president of marketing Allen Gutterman said in a statement. “We ran a similar promotion last year, and despite the fact it was conducted on a much smaller scale, more than one million people participated.
“The exposure this brings to horse racing and to the Breeders’ Cup is just tremendous. I think this is going to expose a lot of new people to the sport in a very positive way.”
The Oak Tree meet begins Sept. 30.
