Julie Krone, who fractured two bones of the lumbar vertebra in her back in a fall at Santa Anita March 8, said she expects to return to competition by the start of the Del Mar meet July 23.

"I feel lousy and I want to ride," Krone, walking with the aid of crutches, said during a Wednesday visit to Santa Anita's jockey room. It was her first trip to the track since she was injured when Sublet fell leaving the gate.

"At first I was hoping I could ride by June, but the doctors said they didn't think so," Krone said. "I'm still awaiting the results of an MRI exam, then in 30 days they'll do another one."

Krone, 39, the only female rider in the Racing Hall of Fame, has won 3,595 races, including 33 at the current Santa Anita meet. At the start of Wednesday's races, she was tied with Victor Espinoza for fifth place in the jockey standings.
