Millionaire Smooth Air, a grade II winner this year and last year, will be sidelined for several months because of a hairline fracture to his pelvis. A homebred for Brian Burns’ Mount Joy Stables, the 4-year-old son of Smooth Jazz suffered the injury as far back as four months ago, which Burns said accounted for the colt’s dull effort in the Aug. 8 Whitney Handicap (gr. I) at Saratoga.
Smooth Air, out of the French Deputy mare Air France, has won or or placed in 14 of 17 races and earned $1,117,200. A dozen of those top three finishes came in stakes, including scores in the 2008 Ohio Derby (gr. II) and the Hutcheson Stakes (gr. II) and the 2009 Gulfstream Park Handicap (gr. II).
