Bailey Shows Golden Touch on Midas Eyes
Jockey Jerry Bailey showed his golden touch with Midas Eyes, runaway winner of Saturday's $150,000 Swale Stakes (gr. III), giving he and trainer Bobby Frankel a sweep of Saturday's rich 3-year-old stakes at Gulfstream Park.Bailey was on a colt with two career starts and had been out of action since breaking his maiden at Calder Race Course on Aug. 17. But Edmund Gann's bay son of Touch Gold toyed with the field of eight, tallying an easy victory over Posse by 9 1/4 lengths. Whywhwhy, the 7-5 favorite, faded to third, nearly 14 lengths behind the winner. Final time for the seven-furlong Swale was 1:21.06.Carrying 116 pounds, six less than Whywhywhy, Midas Eyes broke quickly while stumbling a bit, settling in second place while spotting Massive the lead on his inside through fractions of :21 4/5 for the first quarter-mile and :44 1/5 for the half. Bailey didn't wait long, however, to swing Midas Eyes into action, moving to the front early on the turn as Massive began to tire and kicking away in the stretch. Posse rated between horses before also moving up on turn and going by Whywhywhy at the head of the stretch. Whywhywhy was three wide on the turn and soon came under the whip from jockey Edgar Prado, but offered little response. Midas Eyes completed six furlongs in 1:08 2/5.Midas Eyes won his last start by eight lengths in Calder. In his debut, he was second to Super Fuse at Calder on Aug. 3. He had been training at Hollywood Park. This was Bailey's first time aboard the colt. Bailey and Frankel had earlier teamed up to win the $1 million Florida Derby (gr. I) with Empire Maker. Bred in Florida by Jacks or Better Farm Inc., Midas Eyes picked up a winner's share of $90,000 to push his career earnings to $114,140.Sent off the 4-1 third choice, Midas Eyes paid $10.60, $5 and $2.80. Posse, who was ridden by Don Meche, returned $4.80 and $2.80. WhyWhywhy paid $2.40 to show. (Chart, Equibase)
