Bonnie Miss, Forward Gal Friday at Gulfstream

(from track report)
Fillies take the spotlight at Gulfstream Park Friday when the $200,000 Bonnie Miss Stakes (gr. II) and the $100,000 Stonerside Forward Gal Stakes (gr. III) headline a 10-race card.

Each of the events for 3-year-old fillies drew a field of eight, with the seven-furlong Stonerside Forward Gal the seventh race on the program and the 1 1/8-mile Bonnie Miss the ninth race.

The Bonnie Miss looms a wide-open betting event, with graded stakes winners My Boston Gal and Westerly Breeze seeking redemption after poor outings. Ungraded stakes winners like Ivanavinalot and Ebony Breeze are looking to move up in the world.

The Forward Gal Stakes has a special status this year as the first race in a series for 3-year-old fillies sponsored by Stonerside Stable. Any filly who can win all three seven-furlong events – the Forward Gal, Beaumont at Keeneland and Stonerside Sprint at Lone Star – will take down a $200,000 bonus.

House Party and Chimichurri, the one-two finishers in Gulfstream's Old Hat Stakes on Feb. 2, will get most of the play in the Forward Gal, while Stonerside demands a look with Fast Cookie entered.

Carl Nafzger, who won the Bonnie Miss in 1998 with 3-year-old filly champion Banshee Breeze, will saddle both My Boston Gal and Westerly Breeze. They will run as separate betting interests. Porter, Bloch & Milner owns My Boston Gal and Westerly Breeze runs for A. S. Miles.

My Boston Gal was unbeaten in three starts as a juvenile after taking the Golden Rod Stakes (gr. II) at Churchill Downs last November. She came into the Davona Dale Stakes (gr. II) at Gulfstream on Feb. 23 as the 3-2 favorite. The daughter of Boston Harbor turned in a dull effort that day, running last in the field of five. She has turned in some good works for her return and gets a new rider in Pat Day.

Westerly Breeze won the Alcibiades (gr. II) as a juvenile, but failed to make a dent in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I), running sixth behind Storm Flag Flying. She was sent off the 19-10 favorite in her 3-year-old debut here on Feb. 23 in the Charon Stakes, but finished a well-beaten third. Rene Douglas, who was aboard in the Gone West filly's maiden score at Arlington last summer, gets the call this time.

G.G. Campbell's Ivanavinalot won three stakes at Calder to complete her juvenile season, then traveled to Santa Anita for her 3-year-old debut in the Sunshine Millions Oaks on Jan. 25. She finished second to Atlantic Ocean as the favorite that day, then came back to run second to Yell in the Davona Dale.

Trainer Kathleen O'Connell has made a rider switch for the Bonnie Miss, giving the mount on Ivanavinalot to John Velazquez, who is battling for the Gulfstream riding title.

Jockey Jerry Bailey, who will be looking for his fifth Bonnie Miss victory, gets the call on Kinsman Stable's Ebony Breeze, who is looking for her fourth straight score. The daughter of Belong to Me, trained by Bill Mott, broke her maiden Nov. 24, and has won stakes at Tampa Bay in her last two starts. She gets the rail as she tries two turns for the first time.

The others entered in the Bonnie Miss are Diane and G.B. Snowden's Tarnished Halo, Jose Santos; Tracy Farmer's Holiday Lady, Eibar Coa; R.S. Evans' Spin Control, Edgar Prado, and E.P. Evans' Gold Player, Mark Guidry.

In the Forward Gal, Joseph V. Shields Jr.'s House Party is the morning line favorite off her 1 1/2-length victory over Chimichurri in the six-furlong Old Hat Stakes. Trainer Allen Jerkens has retained jockey Jose Santos, who was aboard in the Old Hat.

Todd Pletcher trains Peachtree Stable's Chimichurri, who went off the even-money favorite in the Old Hat. The Elusive Quality filly won the Tempted Stakes (gr. III) in her final 2-year-old start. She gets John Velazquez aboard again.

Stonerside Stable will try to win its own prize with Fast Cookie, a Deputy Minister filly who won an allowance impressively at Gulfstream Feb. 6. She has ideal South Florida stakes connections – Bill Mott training, Jerry Bailey riding – and has been working well for this event.

The others entered are Barrister Hall Stable's Midnight Cry, Edgar Prado; Michael Gill's City Fire, Cornelio Velasquez; Jacqueline and Manny Tortora's Bella Lauren, Mark Guidry; G. Watts Humphrey Jr.'s Final Round, Pat Day, and Buckram Oak Farm's Glorious Miss, Eibar Coa.
