Gross, Average, Median Increase At Fair Grounds Juvenile Auction

Business boomed at the Fair Grounds Sales Company's select sale of 2-year-olds in training Tuesday in Louisiana as the gross revenue increased by 57.6% from a year ago. In addition, the average price and median price surged by 62.7% and 116.7%, respectively.

The bad news was the buy-back rate, which reached 55.1%, with 38 of the 69 juveniles offered failing to find new homes.

Thirty-one horses were sold for a gross of $418,400, an average of $13,497, and a median of $13,000. In 2002, 32 were sold for a gross of $265,450, an average of $8,295, and a median of $6,000.

Four horses each brought $30,000, which was the auction's top price. They were a Zuppardo's Prince -- Redwood Rose gelding; an Excavate -- Spoiled Splendor filly named American By Choice; a Jade Hunter -- Mine Again colt; and a Kissin Kris--Own It Outright filly named Outright Buck.

Wells Watson and Gael Baggett purchased the Zuppardo's Prince gelding and American By Choice, The former horse was consigned by Billy C. McKeever Jr. and the latter was consigned by H. Rowe and Diana Greene Jr.

Southern Equine Stables purchased the Jade Hunter colt from McKeever, and Valene Farms bought Outright Buck from Fundament Buck Farm.
