(Edited Tattersalls press release)
The Tattersalls December foal sale opened Nov. 25 in England with 159 horses selling for a gross of 1,154,100 guineas ($2.026 million). The average price was 7,258 guineas ($12,740), and the median price was 3,700 guineas ($6,500). Direct comparisons with last year's longer five day sale are difficult, but the clearance rate of 69% was significantly up from the first and second day last year and the turnover was greater the first two days combined.
The top price was the 41,000 guineas ($72,000) brought by bay colt by Royal Applause out of the Cadeaux Genereux mare Three Gifts. Consigned by Paul and Sara Thorman's Trickledown Stud, on behalf of James Read's Selwood Bloodstock, the colt was purchased by Glenvale Stud's Ciaran “Flash” Conroy after he held off Yeomanstown Stud's Gay O'Callaghan. Read had purchased Three Gifts for 10,000 guineas at the 2006 Tattersalls December mare sale. Conroy indicated the colt would be offered next year during Book 2 of the Tattersalls October yearling auction.
