A weekend full of top quality Breeders' Cup-prep racing left blemishes on several records. Gold Mover and Perfect Sting, both undefeated in 2000 prior to Oct. 14, each recorded a loss on the unofficial Breeders' Cup preview weekend. However, Raging Fever remained undefeated after Saturday's Frizette (gr. I) victory over Out of Sync. Raging Fever could take her five wins into the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I).
Edward Evans' Gold Mover suffered her first career defeat in Sunday's Astarita Stakes (gr. II) at Belmont at the hands of Ken Taylor's Xtra Heat, who just edged the daughter of Gold Fever by a neck at the wire. Since breaking her maiden at Keeneland on April 26, Gold Mover had racked up wins in the Kentucky Breeders' Cup Stakes (gr. III), the Debutante Stakes (gr. III), both at Churchill Downs, and the Schuylerville Stakes (gr. II) at Saratoga.
Frank Stronach's Perfect Sting saw her four-race win streak broken in Friday's WinStar Galaxy Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Keeneland. Tout Charmant beat the Red Ramson filly by 1 1/4 lengths. Perfect Sting had rolled off wins in the Beaugay Handicap (gr. IIIT) at Aqueduct, the Just A Game Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. IIIT) at Belmont, and the Diana Handicap (gr. IIT) at Saratoga. Perfect Sting has a lifetime record of 18-12-3.
A possible Breeders' Cup contender who could enter the Nov. 4 championship day is undefeated Flame Thrower, who last raced Oct. 7 in the grade II Norfolk Stakes. The Saint Ballado colt could take his 4-4 record to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I).
