A record 194 horses were nominated to the 2003 Queen Plate, with Wando named the 7-2 winterbook favorite. The 1 1/4-mile race is set for June 22 at Woodbine.
Wando, a chestnut son of Langfuhr, was impressive capturing the Vandal and Grey Breeders' Cup Stakes (Can-II) before finishing 12th in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. Wando finished second in Sovereign Award voting behind Added Edge in the 2-year-old male category.
The Mike Keogh-trained Wando is currently training in South Carolina. "He wintered really well and looks great. He's breezed four times now. He's better looking better this year. I think he looks like his old man (Langfuhr). I'm going to point him toward the Achievement Stakes (six-furlongs race on March 30).
The 5-1 second choice is Arco's Gold. The chestnut Gold Fever colt finished in a dead heat with 6-1 third choice Mobil in the Coronation, but was given the win alone after Mobil was disqualified for interference in the stretch.
The top ten favorites for the Queen's Plate includes:
Arco's Gold (5/1)
Quiet Dare (8/1)
Goldies Legacy (15/1)
Illusive Force (20/1)
Rock Again (20/1)
