A 500,000 square-foot convention center and 400-room motel are part of a $150 million mixed-use project announced by DiMucci Cos. for the former site of Sportsman's Park.
Construction on the project is set to begin this spring. The site will also include soccer fields and a shopping center, the Chicago Tribune reports.
The National Jockey Club put Sportsman's Park on the market last year because of heavy losses resulting from turning the facility into a combination auto racing and horse racing venue. The project, which included a 70,000-seat stadium along with the racetrack, cost $70 million.
However, the Chicago Tribune also reported this week the National Jockey Club received a $750,000 state grant from Gov. George Ryan, just three days before he left office, as a reimbursement for the concrete poured for the track five years ago.
