Hall of Fame jockey Pat Day, third all-time in career victories, will be at Golden Gate Fields Saturday to ride Ten Most Wanted in the $200,000 El Camino Real Derby (gr. III).
Day, who has 8,420 career victories, will be seeking his third win in Northern California's top Kentucky Derby prep race. Day won the El Camino Real Derby in 1988 with the Bobby Frankel-trained Ruhlmann and in 1994 aboard the D. Wayne Lukas-conditioned Tabasco Cat.
Day will ride Ten Most Wanted for trainer Wally Dollase, who will be starting his first horse in the El Camino Real Derby. Day will be flying in from Florida, where he is currently based at Gulfstream Park.
Ten Most Wanted, a Kentucky-bred colt by Deputy Commander, has a win and a second in three career starts. After posting an eight-length victory in a mile maiden allowance race on Jan. 5, Ten Most Wanted finished fourth in the Sham Stakes on Feb. 7 at Santa Anita.
Day will ride Ten Most Wanted for the first time Saturday and is hoping the colt will turn out to be a legitimate candidate for the Kentucky Derby (gr. I).
"Everybody is shopping around for 3-year-olds right now and we're light in that department," said Day. "Wally (trainer Dollase) is very keen on the horse and we've had success together. We're going on Wally's assessment of horseflesh and hoping the horse runs well Saturday."
Last Saturday at Santa Anita, Day rode the Dollase-trained Good Journey to a second-place finish in the $400,000 Frank E. Kilroe Mile. Day and Dollase have won three stakes with 7-year-old Good Journey.
"Wally and I are having a good run with Good Journey and I enjoy doing business with him and his crew," said Day. "He's a very nice man and a real class act."
Chisholm, Horizon Stable, Jarvis, Et al own Ten Most Wanted in partnership.
A field of eight, headed by Golden State Mile winner Ministers Wild Cat, is expected for the El Camino Real Derby.
Scheduled to start are: Crackup (Tyler Baze will ride), Ministers Wild Cat (Kent Desormeaux), Mr. Techinque (Frank Alvarado), Ocean Terrace (Mike Smith), Onebadshark (Ron Warren, Jr.), Ozzie Cat (Jose Valdivia, Jr.), Ten Most Wanted (Pat Day) and Winning Stripes (Russell Baze).
