B M H Stable's Midway Cat, third in the grade I Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream February 15, breezed five furlongs in 1:02 2/5 Wednesday morning at Gulfstream Park in preparation for the $1 million Florida Derby March 15.
"We knocked out an even five-eighths," said trainer Rick Hiles following the mid-week move. "We went out late when the track was pretty cut up and it was hot and humid, but we galloped out in 1:12 and change.
"The jock (Jorge Chavez) was late getting to the barn," Hiles said. "We had him tacked up for half an hour before he got there. The work was okay. It wasn't exactly what I wanted but it will have to do. We're still on schedule for the Florida Derby."
