Thady Quill Captures Sandy Lane Gold Cup
Gay Smith's favored Thady Quill closed from midpack on the final turn to take the $110,000 Sandy Lane Barbados Gold Cup Saturday at Garrison Savannah Racetrack near Bridgetown, Barbados.Ridden by Woodbine-based Jono Jones for champion 84-year-old Barbados trainer Bill Marshall, 6-year-old Thady Quill defeated Eugene Melnyk's Zoning, 18-1 by a length in the 1 1/8-mile Sandy Lane Gold Cup, which is run clockwise, the opposite of the U.S. Firewon, 50-1, was third.It was the fourth consecutive win in the Gold Cup for Jones, who had to survive an inquiry because of a bumping incident.Thady Quill, a late-running miler, broke toward the rear of the 12-horse field and encountered traffic trouble on the tight turns of the Savannah turf course much of the way. Jono, however, eased him found room between horses on the final turn and, after a slight bumping incident, Thady Quill proved best in the short stretch run to the finish.Thady Quill, a close fourth in the Turf Paradise Breeders' Cup Handicap Feb. 1 for trainer Bobby Frankel, arrived in Barbados Feb. 18. "This is something I've been trying for many, many years to win," Mrs. Smith told TVG, which televised the race. "Thady does like to come from far back, so I wasn't that worried about him being in the back."Zoning was one of three horses in the race owned by Melnyk, who lives in Barbados.A son of Nureyev who was previously owned by Gary Seidler, Thady Quill collected his sixth lifetime win in 15 starts while increasing his career bankroll to more than $300,000.Sent off at 2-1, the winner paid $6.40, $4.80 and $3.60. Zoning returned $18.20 and $9.60. Firewon's show price was $12.80.
