Toccet's Derby plans on hold.
Dan Borislow's Toccet, who was sidelined earlier this year with what was diagnosed as a remodeling of the ankles, suffered a slight bruise to his right front foot Saturday after being in training for several days.
Although the colt's foot was fine the next day, Borislow decided it was time to find out once and for all what the problem was. On Tuesday morning at 4 a.m., he flew noted veterinarian Dr. Steve Allday up to Laurel from Florida on a jet to examine the son of Awesome Again. Allday found a slight foot bruise, and said the horse should be back in training in five days.
Toccet had been in steady training prior to the injury and showed no effects from his original problem. Even if the colt does return to training in five days, he will have lost precious time in his attempt to make the Kentucky Derby. The plan was for Toccet to run in the Private Terms Stakes at Laurel on Mar. 29, followed by the Wood Memorial on Apr. 12. Those plans now have been put on hold.
"When I found out he was off again, I wanted to get to the bottom of it and permantly cure whatever it was he had, and Steve Allday has the reputation as the best diagnostic vet in the country," Borislow said. "This injury is a separate incident from his original injury. We're all relieved to find out it's only a slight bruise, but it does screw up our time schedule, which was very tight to begin with. We realize the Derby is now going to be super, super tight, and we might have to change our plans and wait for the Preakness and Belmont. But I don't want to make any decision until I see how quickly he bounces back and how he returns to training. Our ultimate goal is make him the 3-year-old champion."
Toccet, who was bred by Borislow, has won six of his eight starts for earnings of $755,610. His victories include the Champagne Stakes, Hollywood Futurity, Remsen Stakes, and Laurel Futurity.
