West Nile Virus Vaccine Maker Gets Full License

The United States Department of Agriculture has issued a full license to Fort Dodge Animal Health for its West Nile virus vaccine based on the results of efficacy studies completed and submitted to the USDA.

Fort Dodge was given a conditional license for the vaccine in 2001 under expedited review because of the widespread threat of West Nile virus.

Dr. Tom Overbay, director of Field Veterinary Services at Fort Dodge, said 95% of horses vaccinated with two doses of the vaccine and challenged with the live virus 12 months later were free from viremia (presence of the virus in the bloodstream, a prerequisite for the induction of neurological disease caused by West Nile virus).

The product will be marketed under the name "West Nile -- Innovator," and will be available from licensed veterinarians only.
