Horse of the Year Azeri drilled four furlongs in :47 flat Saturday morning at San Luis Rey Downs, the first work for the 5-year-old daughter of Jade Hunter since she won the Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I) last Oct. 26 at Arlington Park.
Trainer Laura DeSeroux, on hand at Santa Anita on Friday morning, said she is optimistic that Azeri will be ready for her 2003 debut in the Apple Blossom Handicap (gr. I) at Oaklawn Park on April 5.
"I feel fairly confident we'll make that (Apple Blossom)," DeSeroux said. "She looks great and she's retained her fitness. That makes me happy."
Azeri won the Apple Blossom last April 6 by 1 ¾ lengths, her smallest margin of victory.
Azeri has won 10 of her 11 career starts with earnings of $2,227,740.
