Turfway Park canceled its seventh straight racing program Feb. 21, and the forecast for the weekend indicated the weather may continue to be unkind to the Northern Kentucky racetrack. Meanwhile, the track said it plans to add Monday racing in March to make up for lost days.
The Feb. 21 program was scrapped because the racing surface was thawing unevenly. Warmer temperatures, melting snow, and rain created the problem.
The streak began Feb. 13, when jockeys took off their mounts because of poor track conditions. A winter storm then worsened the conditions.
So far in 2002, Turfway has lost nine full racing programs. Live racing is scheduled to resume Feb. 21.
Turfway plans to race Mondays in March with a first post time of 1:10 p.m. to make up for the canceled programs. Mondays are popular at simulcast outlets because Gulfstream Park and Fair Grounds are open for business.
