Grade II winner Whatsthescript, who stood the first part of the year at Tom and Debi Stull’s Tommy Town Thoroughbreds near Santa Ynez, Calif., finished third in the July 10 Battlefield Stakes at Monmouth Park following his return to racing. Trained by Gary Contessa, Whatsthescript was beaten just 1 1/2 lengths in the mile turf stakes.
The Battlefield was Whatsthescript’s first start since the Irish-bred horse finished unplaced in last year’s TVG Breeders’ Cup Mile (gr. IT) at Oak Tree at Santa Anita.
“He acted liked he was happy to be back,” said Tommy Town farm manager Mike Allen. “We’ll keep him racing as long as he likes it.”
Six-year-old Whatsthescript (Royal Applause--Grizel, by Lion Cavern) upped his career earnings to $917,964 with his Battlefield earnings of $10,000. A three-time graded winner, Whatsthescript has won or placed in a dozen stakes in North America and placed in one in Ireland.
Whatsthescript covered 26 mares this year.
