Heavy favorite Lacie Girl got up in the final jump to defeat Onslaught by a head in the $60,550 Richmond Handicap at Golden Gate Fields Sunday.
Lacie Girl needed the entire stretch run to overhaul her speedy rival in the six-furlong Richmond. Ridden by Russell Baze, Lacie Girl won the Richmond in 1:09.26.
"I had to ride her hard all the way," said Baze. "That's just the way she is. I felt pretty confident at the top of the stretch but I felt a lot better when I finally got the lead."
The loss was a tough one for Onslaught, who has now finished second in five stakes, and jockey Chad Schvaneveldt.
"She ran dynamite," said Schvaneveldt. "She left the gate like a rocket and kept digging in the stretch. Last time she (Lacie Girl) beat us by two lengths and today it was just a head, so maybe next time."
Lacie Girl, a 4-year-old filly by Editor's Note, earned her sixth victory in seven career starts and paid $3.20 as the 3-5 favorite in a field of seven fillies and mares. Lacie Girl is trained by Jerry Hollendorfer and owned in partnership by Hollendorfer and Marta Racing Ventures.
