California Owner Mankiewicz Dies of Cancer

Veteran California owner Tom Mankiewicz died July 31 after a bout with cancer. He was 68.

Mankiewicz raced grade I winners Dearest Trickski and Victory Encounter, both of whom were trained by John Sadler.

"I was devastated to hear the news,” Sadler said. “It's a big loss. He was a terrific person, and he loved racing and coming to the races. He was not only a great owner, but he was a great fan, too. He was more of a regular at Santa Anita and Hollywood Park because he lived in that area. He told me we’d try to claim some 2-year-olds this season.”

Mankiewicz was an early partner in racing with actor Robert Wagner and Jerry Moss. With Moss, he raced two stakes winners in the late 1990s.

Dearest Trickski and Victory Encounter were both fillies. Dearest Trickski biggest win came in the 2007 La Brea Stakes, and Victory Encounter’s top score came in the 2004 Vanity Handicap (gr. I). Each filly also won a stakes at Del Mar.
Sadler sent out Lady Alex, owned by Mankiewicz, in the fourth race at Del Mar July 31. She finished fourth.
