WinStar unleashed a half brother to its Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner Super Saver in the second race at Belmont Park Oct. 16, and the result proved highly promising. Two-year-old Brethren , by WinStar stallion Distorted Humor , scored by a half-length in a swift 1:08.88 for six furlongs as part of the odds-on favored WinStar entry in his first start (VIDEO).
Coupled with Fire With Fire, also by Distorted Humor and also making his first start, homebred Brethren was the stronger half of the entry. He had flashed a pair of bullet workouts at Belmont this month. He finished up in 1:00 4/5 Oct. 3 and in :59 3/5 Oct. 10.
Brethren, trained by Todd Pletcher, grabbed the lead from pacesetter Backdown in the final furlong and held off Black N Beauty, who got up for second. Fire With Fire, trained by Bill Mott, ran fourth. Backdown ended up fifth.
Brethren is out of the A.P. Indy mare Supercharger.
WinStar, until recently owned by Bill Casner and Kenny Troutt, now is owned solely by the latter. The farm is located near Versailles, Ky.
