Battle Won put in a sustained drive under jockey Willie Martinez to win a contentious maiden special weight race for 3-year-olds Friday at the Fair Grounds.
Martinez started off hot Friday at the Fair Grounds, sweeping both halves of the daily double, then rallied debuting Battle Won in the finale to earn his third win on the card. In that race, Robby Albarado was going for his fourth win on the day aboard Laura Melnyk's $375,000 yearling purchase Pie Corner (by Grand Slam), who finished 10th.
Battle Won completed the six furlongs in 1:11.61, three-quarters of a length ahead of Dale's Demon Red, who was making his second start for trainer Steven Asmussen. Four Majors, a $350,000 yearling purchase by Grand Slam, finished third, a half-length farther back. Favored Guardian, a Dallas Stewart-trained son of Touch Gold and a $450,000 yearling acquisition for Gary and Mary West, finished sixth after setting the early pace in his racing debut.
Lazy Lane Farms Inc.'s Battle Won is a son of Metropolitan Handicap (gr. I) winner Honour and Glory and is trained by Frank Brothers. He was purchased for $325,000 at the Keeneland September yearling sale of 2001. Glencrest Farm LLC bred Battle Won from the Caller I.D. mare Call Her. (Chart, Equibase
