Gal O Gal and jockey Christopher DeCarlo found room in a crowded stretch drive at the hedge and got through to score a half-length victory over Formal Miss in the $100,000 Herecomesthebride Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Gulfstream park Saturday.
It was the fourth straight win on the lawn for the Florida-bred daughter of Manlove, who was making a successful stakes debut for breeder/owner Max Hugel and trainer Vincent Blengs. Final time for the 1 1/16-mile turf test was 1:42.38.
Jockey Carlos Gonzalez rated Formal Miss in second behind longshot Bolaro through moderate fractions of :24.40, :49.01 and 1:12.60. Formal Miss got to the lead in th stretch as Gal O Gal looked to find room behind several horses. Gal O Gal split rivals in midstretch and got to the hedge, where she squeezed through and went on to win the stretch duel. Devil At The Wire edged Askforaraise for third. Favored Sweettrickydancer was not involved.
Gal O Gal won for the fifth time in eight career outings while nearly doubling her overall earnings to $120,220 with her $60,000 winning purse. She is now five-for-six on the grass.
Sent off at 3-1 in the field of eight, the winner paid $8.60, $5.20 and $3.60. Formal Miss returned $11.20 and $7. Devil At The Wire, ridden by Mark Guidry, paid $3 to show. The $2 exacta was $88.
