Noches de Rosa Scores in Reloy 'Cap

Noches de Rosa, a 5-year-old Chilean-bred mare, recorded her first North American victory Friday, capturing the featured $81,800 Reloy Handicap at Santa Anita Park by one length.

Ridden by Julie Krone for trainer Richard Mandella, Noches de Rosa, who hadn't finished in the top three in any of her five previous U.S. starts, took a short lead in upper stretch and held on to win the 1 1/4-mile turf race in 2:00.08.

Mandella and Krone, both members of the Racing Hall of Fame, also combined to win Friday's fifth race with Brazilian-bred Out Of Mind.

The 8-year-old, once a stakes star, ended a nine-race losing streak with his one-length victory in the $47,000, 1 1/16-mile dirt event for $45,000-$50,000 claimers.

Out Of Mind hadn't won since he captured the Mervyn LeRoy Handicap (gr. II) at Hollywood Park on May 18, 2000.He subsequently ran fourth in that year's Hollywood Gold Cup (gr. I). His winning time Friday was 1:43.35.

Noches de Rosa paid $9.60, $4.80 and $3.40. Irish-bred Snowflake, the 2-1 favorite among seven older fillies and mares in the Reloy, returned $3.20 and $2.80, nipping Keys to the Heart, who paid $4.60 to show.
