Zelda Cohen, whose late husband Ben Cohen owned Pimlico with his brother Herman, died Jan. 24 at a Baltimore hospital because of congestive heart failure. She was 99.
Ben and Zelda Cohen operated a successful racing and breeding operation and among their approximately 25 stakes winners, all of which raced in her name, was Hail to All. The homebred colt won the 1965 Belmont Stakes over Preakness winner Tom Rolfe, and also scored major wins in that year's Travers Stakes and Jersey Derby. Zelda Cohen also campaigned several stakes winners in her name.
Cohen, who achieved acclaim as a hostess for her Preakness parties, is survived by daughters Charlotte and Rosalee, plus grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her husband died in 1994.
