The $80,000 Portland Meadows Oaks, part of the Black-Eyed Susan 2.2 program for 3-year-old fillies, is the featured event for a special Saturday program Jan. 29 at the Oregon racetrack.
The Oaks, at one mile, will be the richest race run at Portland Meadows since 1987, when the $100,000 Coors Mile was held. That race was won by Present Value, ridden by Willie Shoemaker.
If the winner of the Portland Meadows Oaks can win the Santa Anita Oaks (gr. I) March 5, the Gulfstream Park Oaks (gr. II) April 2, and Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (gr. I) May 20, the owner(s) of the horse will receive a $2 million bonus, and the trainer would receive a $200,000 bonus. The program is offered by MI Developments, which owns the tracks in the series.
Leading trainer Jerry Hollendorfer has entered two runners for the Portland Meadows Oaks, including probable favorite Alec's Moon, who will ship from Santa Anita Park where she finished seventh in the $150,000 Santa Ynez Stakes (gr. II) in her last start. Previously, she won an allowance/optional claiming race at Hollywood Park.
Joe Crispin will ride Alec’s Moon, who is owned by Dr. Mark DeDomenico.
Hollendorfer also has entered Golden Bow, who broke her maiden at Portland Meadows Oct. 13 before returning to Golden Gate Fields, where she finished fifth in a $12,500 claiming event. Jockey Jose Zunino will have the mount aboard Golden Bow.
Portland Meadows will offer another stakes, the $25,000 Governor’s Speed Handicap, Jan. 29. The six-furlong test is the main prep for the $50,000 Portland Mile March 23.
First post time for the Jan. 29 card is 12:40 p.m. PST. HRTV will offer live coverage.
