(from track report)Turfway Park's leading rider, Jason Lumpkins, won five races on Saturday's card, including the $50,000 Forego Stakes aboard Billy Tucker's Private Horde.
It marked the third time since the Winter-Meet began on January 1 that Lumpkins had five winners in a day. The record at Turfway is six victories set by Kris Prather during the 2001 Winter-Spring meet.
Lumpkins is dominating the meet with 39 wins from 110 starters through Saturday, a 35 percent winning rate. Dean Butler is second in the Turfway jockey standings with 11 victories.
"I've just been doing my job, but this has been a lot of fun," said Lumpkins about his recent success.
Private Horde broke sharply from post position five and settled into to second place behind 6-to-5 favorite Ultimate Warrior, part of the Bernie Flint-trained entry, through fractions of :22.48 and :45.11 for the first half mile. Lumpkins showed the winner the whip rounding the turn for home and he bounded away for an easy two-length victory over Still Be Smokin'. Gallatin Kid rallied to finish another half-length back in third. Winning time was 1:16.43 for 6 ½ furlongs over a fast track.
"I knew Flint's horse (Ultimate Warrior) was the main speed, so I didn't want to let him get two far ahead," said Lumpkins. "He started looking around through the turn, so I began to hit him left handed and that got his mind back on business. I had ridden him in his last race (a 5 ¼ length victory in an allowance race), so I knew he had a lot of talent. He won very easily today."
Private Horde, a 4-year-old Brunswick colt trained by Joe Cain, improved his record to 5-2-0 in 17 starts and has now earned $124,095. He returned $9.60, $6.20 and $6.00 as the 7-to-2 second choice in the nine-horse field.
